    Default Canon 40D vs 5D mk11

Hi everybody. Can someone please tell me if the 5D has the same autofocus speed as the 40D. I know most of the 5D specs but can't find a real answer for this. Would appreciate help.
    Thx so much

The AF is different Kobus !!!! The current 5D Mk2 has the same AF as the original 5D .. no changes.

I've heard that the 5D is relatively slower in the AF department, but I have no firsthand experience.

AF acquisition speed is better on the 40d than the 5d.

I found 5d AF acquisition speed to be on par with the 20d.

5D /5DII AF is very similar to the original 20D + 6 invisible assist points around the center point. In my experience 5DMKII AF is good but not as fast as either the 40D or 50D. It is not suitable for general BIF, but good enough for stationary birds or birds that cruise slowly in predicable paths like pelicans.

Don't mean to disagree, but the 5dII actually does a pretty decent job with BIF. In this case, initial acquisition speed isn't critical, rather it benefits from the AF assist points for follow-focus, as you mentioned.

Romy Ocon in the Philippines now uses the 5dII exclusively. Here's one of his threads I noticed of his BIF testing:

I have to disagree with most folks here. I have had a pretty good experience with the 5D2 AF. I have found it comparable to the 40D.

Check out this comment from Chuck Westfall about the differences in AF between the 40D and the 5D2.

The answer is not cut and dry, because of the arrangement of the AF sensors one will do better than the other in different situations.
