Default Has Anyone Ever Heard of This??

A friend of mine who lives in the country says that lots of Robins are trying to get in through his glass windows. It starts early in the morning and lasts til sundown. They start at the bottom, and try to fly and scratch their way up on the window. Are they seeing their reflection and being agressive thinking that it is competition for mating season and trying to attack? Has anyone ever heard of this???

not sure about robins Jackie, but I have seen red shoulder hawks
do this on several occasions....attacking their reflections for long
    periods of time

It is fairly common with cardinals, too.

Jackie: There are numerous birds that can get aggressive and fight their reflections during the spring and into summer. For several years we had a male cardinal do much the same to our windows. But he also had a twist to this fight. He brought raspberries along (possibly to feed his chicks) and in the process of fighting his reflection smashed the raspberries on the window. I spent days washing those windows until I realized he wasn't going to stop. Eventually he did stop and then it was safe to wash the window. This occurred for several years and I learned not to waste my time washing windows. Now that I'm recounting this I realize that he didn't show up last year.

We've had mockingbirds, cardinals, robins, Baltimore orioles and worst of all an adult turkey tom fight their reflections in our windows. The last was downright frightening as he would back up and run full tilt at the window. I was sure it was going to break at any moment. That's a lot of bird to crash into a window.

You could try to break the reflection with a piece of fabric or something similar.

Jackie, This is really common with Cardinals-I usually hang dark screen mesh with thumbtacks over the window till they go away!
