This is a major reason that my wife and I choose to support Lion Country Safari, WPB. The fact that there is a second chance for critters, who otherwise would be without a second chance.

Shot this image yesterday as we entered the park. These two males were dancing (mating dance) on the island in
Safariland. It was a quick shot and not the best setting, shot at 350mm, but it was a quick grab and had to crop to about 25% of original. (It which was my wife's first experience with it, though I had told her about seeing it in mass on the Platte River during spring migration a few years ago.) I wanted to catch them doing the dance. It wasn't until I got home and could view it on the monitor that the nature of the image struck me.

Some believe that we should not support wildlife parks and zoos, but they support the wildlife, as that is their basis for being in business. We believe that LCS is a good samaritan of wildlife and the fact that these and many other birds could not survive in the wild, but are cared for is very much appreciated.

Hope you get a chance to visit sometime. Hope you find the desire to support them and others who really care about the environment and man's affect on it and the critters that share it with us.

I agree with you Mark and so glad there is a place for these beauties to live out the remaining part of their lives.
Thanks for sharing and supporting such a great cause.

    Hi Maxis,

The island is about 75 yards from the near side of the entry road. When I saw them and decided to take a shot I was across the road in the parking lot by the rest rooms. Due to the lighting and leaving the lot for the rest of the activities, I didn't take time to get more images, just a quick shot. They had been jumping together when I saw them but settled down after that. I have not seen them there before. At LCS the animals move and the people are in cages (cars).;) I will have to see if they are displayed in this area on the next excursion.

I knew it wasn't a good image, but felt it was worth showing for what it is.

Gus, I've found that the early morning, 9:30 timeframe and after 3 in the afternoon are good times. If you can get there when they open, as we use to do when we lived in Jupiter, you can see the lions being brought out. The negative is that they are now behind a cyclone fence. But during the day they just lay around whereas early morning they sometimes romp for a while if it is cool like in winter. They have some interesting perches for the lions, but unfortunately they are close to the fence, so it is hard, though not impossible to use depth of field to block out the fence. Wish they would have built them about 10' farther from the fence for photogs. Cloudy days are definitely a bonus in that area.

I attached an example of the lion deck. I did not make any adjustments to the image. Ok to critique, but just so you know this is out of the camera, just to show you how the fence interacts with the image. This is a very good shot in that regard, as normally the fence is "glowing" from the sunlight. While I don't care for the shadows, the fact that the one lioness is fully lit makes it acceptable to me, for that is what is there now

It's an easy clone adjustment to remove the reflections. Just wish the fence wasn't there so I could get images like I did with film in the past. But as usual, someone probably tried to open their door and pet the "kitties", so the rest of us are now behind the fence!!!

Alfred, yes, it has been here for a while. I was there when we came down for Spring Break, in Ft Lauderdale, in the late 60's! They are putting a lot of work into it now, and it should be nicer in the next year or so.

Thank Goodness for good samaritans, certain death for these creatures in the wild.
