This photo was taken today, mid-morning, in fairly bright sunlight. The crop is minimal. A spear of grass near the beak and one above the Avocet's head were cloned out. I'm wondering if I made the image too dark . . . etc. . . .

HI Wendell- does not look to dark to me - looks a bit flat on my screen. Like the inclusion of the grasses, would move your subject out of the middle a little by cropping some from the right hand side. Good HA and eye contact - Would have liked to see a lower shooting angle.
    Keep them coming :)

Thanks for your comments, Lance. Any suggestions for things I might do in PP to improve the"a bit flat" look?

If you are using Photoshop try doing a global Unsharp Mask at 20,80,0.

Bill, I just now gave your suggestion a try, and it did help -- brightened things up a bit . . .

Hi Wendell the best way to brighten is curves !!!! Give a try

Wish you had photographed the bird a little to the left so the grasses were not right behind him, do like the habitat inclusion, pose and overall feel !!!

    Hi Wendell.
I like the capture...the image looks a tad under exposed...agree with Mr. Forns on moving your position at the time of capture to isolate the grass in the background...looking forward to your next one...
