Hi guys, I'm busy doing a basic seascape workshop - we had to take various shots and then see how best to crop/ tone down the sun etc. (I don't have ND filters yet!!!!)
    Suggestions?
Do I crop the sun out and focus on the golden light on rocks and fg?

    Jen,

I cannot help but have always wanted to know how to control the bright sun in images like this (nice shot). I have several evening pics of ducks flying but the sun is too distractive and what is a ND filter.

Bright sun you leave it as is and not much you can do with Just worry about everything else !!!

For these type local changes are important Would use selection tools ... the one area I would modify is the cloud layer, need some contrast changes. btw if you use LR there are some neat tools, one is a masking tool ... made for just these changes !!

    Hi Jeni,
I like the capture and composition...the sun is as is no modifications...I would recommend on opening up the mid-tones on the rocks and the water very little...the clouds can use some saturation and a contrast adjustment to make them pop...looking forward to your next one...

There are ways to deal with a flare like this. Depends on how far you want to go (or are allowed to go in your class) in altering what comes out of the camera. If this much is allowed, I can explain how to do it. It isn't rocket surgery, but it does go a little beyond beginner's skills in Photoshop.

Here are two versions, one with the sun defined, the second with the sun blurred (more realistic?):

David, whether or not allowed in Jeni's class, please explain away! :D

I am keeping a folder of all of your and others explanations of various aspects of PS as I start to scratch the surface.

    Thanks, ;)

Hi jeni - agree with Gus - all that is required are some tweaks, like both of davids reposts.
ND = Neutral Density filter - available in a few different strengths allows you to darken 1/2 of your image (in camera - as it is placed over the lens before taking the shot) thus reducing the contrast between the two halfs of your image, most useful is probably the .9 which cuts the light by 3 stops.

Here you go, Jay and Jeni. I outlined the steps in a little pdf, which you can download here.

David, thank you so much!!! This is my 2nd attempt - I think I will need to practice more.
Al and Gus, have added contrast to clouds, lifted midtones on rocks and saturated a little.
    Better?
Thanks so much for all the help!!:D:D

I like the image, especially as modified. However, I would suggest you recrop it for accent. I have attached a series to show what I would consider.

The first is a copy of your original full image, showing the "rule of 1/3rds" overlayed.

The second shows the areas to be cropped to put the sun in the upper left hand power point (intersection) of the 1/3rd overlay. This is presuming that your intent is to highlight the sun as your main focal point, a rock or cloud could also be in another image, but given your shot I presumed that was your intent. The white out areas shows the areas to be removed.

To get the proportions, put the power point over the subject and measure the horizontal and vertical distance from the nearest corner. Multiply by 3 and that is the final H & V size.

The last image is the final cropped image.

Just one alternative, not the only one, but worth considering.

You could add border, to change the composition, but I don't think it is needed.

I did no other PP of the image, as others have commented on that.

I like the reduction of the sun flare though.
