This Snowy Egret on our left was the town's bully at the Alligator Farm. He picked a fight with anybody that was near him, including a huge Great Egret. He had a bell (to the right) and no branches or offerings. When he wanted to mate, he grabbed her by the neck, as in the picture. Not happy with that, after mating, he proceeded to beat the living heck out of the poor female
He did give me a lot of sky pointing images. The bird is a sociopath!!!

I've never seen this behavior, looks quite painful. Breeding colors and exposure control look very good.

Very nice! One great action/behavior picture. I like the details and wing spread of the male. Good timing on your part to to capture good head angles on both birds. Impressive!

Super behavioural image Fabs. Well timed to show the outspread wings, and well exposed too.

Your captured his psycho behaviour well, Fabs. Lovely colours in the birds and great detail in the plumes. How do you find the focus speed on the 80-400 using the D3?

I returned the lens, Tony. I wasn't thrilled with the results. Speed for BIF at a distance was fair, not for the closer ones and never acquired the ones coming at you.
I didn't like the ratio of keepers sharpness wise.

    Thanks all for your comments!

Fabs, you did a good job! I can appreciate the fact because I witness these Snowy altercations quite often, especially during breeding season. There are three things that make photographing them such a challenge. 1) the conflict is often over a a matter of seconds, if that long, and focus locking is difficult2) It is especially difficult to get both birds in the same focal plane i.e. one will most likely be out of focus to some degree. 3) Often branches or other form of vegetation will block part of the action.
You did well to get both with F8, etc. regards~Bill

Did he have a bell (to ring) to his right or a girlfriend (belle)? :) :) :)

Wonderful job of getting the neck grab. I think that making the whole thing a bit brighter might improve it.
