Everyone was so encouraging on the Mountain Bluebird image I posted yesterday that I was excited to post another one for more suggestions and critiques. A bit more exotic locale this time (South Georgia Island).

Hi Ted - Exposure was a bit more challenging on this one, you could have pushed the histogram a bit further to the right - but it still would not have changed = For my personal tastes there is not enough detail in the faces especially the eyes and really the only thing that might have helped would have been some fill flash.
Like the overall feel, as presented i would probably evict the penguin in the BG with his bill cut off.
H Ted I downloaded and did some playing around with the image. Tried lightening but didn't get much better since the shadows get washed out. Increasing contrast does enhance the image.
The key to this one is nailing he exposure in good light !! You actually did not do all that bad It is a little under not not as much as it seems. Exposure mode wise you do need to go in manual for this one, just moving the camera a few inches will have exp variations according to the bg. In harsh light or actually in anything but soft light the dynamic range will exceed the capabilities of the camera.
Tech wise I'm glad your using your ISO Would suggest to maximize dof as much as you can since having faces sharp is a big deal, if there was more detail you could see the sharpening difference.
Agree on evicting the bird on the right and for this with multiple birds you also want to look for head angles .... for the entire gang ... difficult but rewarding when you pull one off !!!
Hi Ted,
I like the capture and the action...agree with the techs. mentioned...also agree with eliminating the subject on the right hand side...looking forward to your next capture...
Offline for a few days and just pulled this up. I love what you did with the photo. You really made it pop! Thanks for taking the time. I would love to replicate your work as part of my ongoing learning process. Did you edit in Photoshop? How do you go about setting white & black points?
