Tricolored Herons look so pretty in their breeding plumage. At the Farm, I always look for uncluttered BGs, the birds are readily available, you just need to be patient and wait for them to be in the right place.

Cool hairdo, breeding colors, details and soft light. The BG adds interest.

This capture is stunning. I love the way you have centered it, and the BG is a kicker. He looks so regal, and the light is so perfect.

Did you use any fill flash in this image?

No, Marina, natural light. I'm not a flash lover and only use it for close flights and on cloudy days.
I find that fill flash eliminates the definition in the feathers. Unless there are heavy shadows you need to fill, I rather go natural.
Another exception is back lit subjects.

    Thank you guys!

This looks like a right-in-the-face portrait.

Very nice details on those feathers.

The BG is interesting also and showcase the bird very nicely.

Pure eye candy -- great to get both eyes on a headon shot

Amazingly sharp where it counts, and love the feather detail. The head on angle works very well, as both eyes are clearly visible. What killer light and colours in the BG. Congrats Fabs.
