    Default Idaho Owl

    Olympus E-3
    Flash extender 708 mm 1/640 sec f/8.9 ISO 500
Metering Mode center weighted (2) Exposure Program manual (1)

Light was harsh with sun high as it was 11:35 AM by the time I took this one.
After trying to capture these guys for hours from a blind in an area where I could see many I left without an image of them. They just did not cooperate and possibly because of their numbers and competition going on for burrows and for the lady owls too.

I move to a new local where I located a pair and observed them before setting up. I set up on the opposite side of my vehicle low to the ground and decided to see what response I might get with a call. I used call once and waited but not for long as this fellow responded by flying in to perch fairly close to me to look for another male he thought he had heard. More "calling" from then on was not used as he continues to move about the area using different perches to scout for competition.

Harsh light well managed. Shame on the shadow in the eye. You could use some noise reduction in the BG and some more sharpening in the bird. Cropping some off the right of the frame will get the bird off center.

    Hi Kim !!

Might want to experiment with the flash I don't see much evidence it actually reached the bird Could try at home with different settings and see what you are getting !!!

I have been and I am doing just that Alford and good suggestion. I just got the FL50 and before had the FL36 so a bit more power is in hand now. The Better Beamer is even fairly new to me too so lots of experimentation is going on here.

This owl was quite active in the area so moving from one distance to another, then changing to yet another fairly quickly. Each place he decided to land would of course have a bit different light or angle of natural light so it was a bit of a "Hail Mary" even in trying to use what I know. Lots of fun though! ;)

Thanks for looking and the suggestion.

Kim, this image lacks in IQ compared to others you have posted before? Quite soft and noisy. I do like the personality you captured here, quite the curious looking fella :-)

Hi Kim, I tend to agree with Daniel, the IQ does seem to be quite soft and noisy, but what a great subject.
