    Default Costa Rican Flycatcher

    Hi Folks!
Another image from the Doug/Greg Costa Rica trip. This is one of my favourites - deliberately went for the minimal look. The white BG is a wall - very little PP needed!

Great perch; kind of looks like a pinwheel. Like the minimalist feel; very un-Costa Rica, but very effective.

Nice, traditional Japanese minimalist design. I like it a lot. That is a kiskadee, yes? I'd move the image up and to the right a little in the crop rectangle so if and when you mat and frame you get the same composition.

I like the idea, pose and perch. I might put the bird a tad further to the right in the frame and sharpen it a bit more.

I like the curved perch, together with the inquisitive head turn Nicki. The wall hepled you a lot for a smooth BG. I agree to move him to the right a bit, and would clone out the tiny twig below his tail. Still, well captured Nicki. Looks like you came away with a lot of winners. Looking forward to more.

Interesting concept I think a square crop would still keep the concept while removing a lot of dead space.

Very artistic Nicki! Lots of room on the right for a sig. or asian style chop! This is a Social Flycatcher BTW!

I like what you have done here. This image has a great feel to it. I like the open space but might be tempted to see how it would look with just a little removed. Very nice as presented.

Hi Everyone and thank you for all the suggestions and feedback. I have reposted with a squarer crop and have also cloned out the little branch under the bird's feet. Dan, thanks for the ID - I was hoping that you would do that for me!!
    Best,
    Nicki

Nicki, I like the original crop. Small subjects look better closer to the corners of the frame, as you have here.
What is on the way is the long upper branch. If it was shorter (prune it!) the negative space would be more balanced.

You have to find time to go to Out of the Box, we got graphic desgin composition exercises going!!!!

    Here's my take at crop.

Fabs, I'll certainly try and visit OOTB!!
Actually I think that I prefer the original crop too...

Hi, Nicki. I remember this opportunity. You know my feelings on the value of images produced in-camera, and I think the original presentation is great. Crop too much, and you'll have to clone out branch tips (if you want to keep the original feel of the photo), which then puts you down a different road IMHO.

Dan, thanks for the ID. I hate trying to ID the flycatchers down here!

    Cheers,
    Greg

    Hi Nicki!

I will say that I also prefer your original post.

I also agree with Dan about the ID.

Very nice feeling in this one. Hope to see more of what you got down here.

    Cheers.

Keep the original untouched. Very creative, I like it a lot.
