From Sibley: These relatively large and long-billed species prefer rocky habitats. Canyon is found on or near cliffs or steep, rocky slopes: The description about steep, rocky slopes is only too true. Large formations of granitic talus is where one has to go if your are to get images of these. They live in the deep crevicies of the large boulders. This is a place where a tri-pod will be more a hinderence than a help: a mono-pod and bean bag are the best bets.

Self critique: I think I like this one as is.

    EXIF:
    Canon 30 D: EF 500 IS L @ 4.0: 1/4000@ f 5.6, EXP comp -.33 : metering mode, partial : ISO 400 : white bal 5200 : Fill flash, Canon EX 580 gun, 1/8 power : Better Beamer extender : RAW, processed in Adobe Lightroom, CS2, : monopod

    Feel free;)

Seems to be a tough bird to find in SoCal these days for some reason. You really nailed the sharpness and exposure. (and I think that you meant to say "cliffs", right? ;))

Lovely pose and Like the colours on him. I would maybe tone down the rock he is perched on.

I agree with Stuart about oning down the rock, and maybe fix the double catchlight, but I love the rest of the image. Beautiful in its' simplicity. There is small amout of posterization in the BG, no doubt caused by dowsizing.

Thanks for comment and observation. "Posterization" is as much from changing from 16 bit to 8 bit as it is to down sizing. Should have previewed before post.

I like the angle, light and eye contact. The bird looks a bit oversharpened on my monitor.
