    Default More from Costa Rica!

    Hello partners!

I've been testing lots of things (read discovering!) and finally started to take pictures on manual mode!

I must be honest and say that I was not feeling very confident since I was in charge of all the process, but at the end I guess I am liking it better than shooting AV mode which has been for a long time my preference.

The other day I was reading what other partner was saying about ''we bird photographers are crazy'' and he is so right!

Yesterday I woke up at 3:00am, and believe me, that's very early here! then I drove for two hours until I got to a reserve where there's a report of 400 species of birds, well, the road was muddy as can be (good thing I was driving my old Nissan who takes me everywhere and is a real 4x4!) any ways, I got to this reserve around 6:00 and started to watch some birds, lots of noise but no birds. Finally I saw some eye candy for any bird lover! two song wrens, one ocellated antbird and a bunch of bicolored antbirds who where following an-army ant swarm. No, no luck at all since it was so early and the forest floor was very dark. May be next time.

Ok, but in the very late afternoon I got a picture of this tiny fellow (Green Thorntail male) who really saved my day since there where not too many opportunities for bird photography.

    Self critique:
1-The head is away from me, this is the only picture showing some eye after the burst!
2-I'm not too sure about the post processing.:(

    All advise is welcome.

The bird is pollinating a Porterweed (Stachytarpheta franzii)

Juan Carlos nos estáis matando con estos fotones de Costa Rica :-D
Very good selfcritic JC. The processing job looks pretty nice to my eyes, very good. At first glance I was tempted to say that the bird is a bit centered on the frame but after a carefully looking to your image I have to say that I like the composition because the most important details in the image (the flower and the hummingbird head) are on the right position. I like the natural light a lot. Very good result

Stunning light, amazing colours, and sharp where it counts. What a killer BG too. I would maybe take a bit off the bottom. Congrats Juan.

PP looks good to me. Nice colors. You mentioned the head angle but you still have eye contact. I like the blur and the plane of the wings.

    Hi Juan Carlos!
I must tell you how much I enjoyed being in your beautiful country recently with Greg Baco and Doug Brown - I really had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back...
I love your image as presented - tack sharp where it counts - wouldn't change a thing.
    Best,
    Nicki

I like this. Well done. I do feel you can light it up a bit and crop a bit tighter. What you think?

I like your self-critique Juan. I think you did a fine job with the processing. I never did get a good Green Thorntail image at Rancho Naturalista; congrats to you on getting a nice thorntail with a beautiful flower and BG!
