Another from the Doug/Greg Costa Rica tour. The amazing thing of the tour is how they worked with the local people
so you can get wonderful photos and see some incredible birds. This one was from the backyard of a woman whom graciously made us coffee while thirteen photographers crowded her tiny yard. Doug and Greg can tell you more - I was impressed.

I like the colors, background, and perch. I am not sure about the second catch-light, and also will like that the tail was on the front side of the perch. Great picture.

Wonderful bird. Nice BKGR. I could do without the broken tip on the perch but you can cover that in PS without too much difficulty. Count me in the I-would-like-to- see-the-whole-tail camp. The head is turned away a bit and the merge of the dark area at the top with the head is unfortunate. Raising the tripod a bit would have helped with that. My biggest problem with the image, however (and I am surprised that nobody above mentioned it, is that the face looks a bit muddy: too SATed, too much sharpening, too much contrast....

    Nice presentation of this guy!

The perch certainly adds to this species that inhabits our middle and high elevations.

    Sharpness has been mentioned.

The name is Flame-colored Tanager (Piranga bidentata)

    Great work, keep it coming.

Great work with this one Gary. I like the arched shape of the perch and the position of the bird in relation to it.
