Taken yesterday morning near Boundary Bay, BC. Not much colour in this one. 50D, 400/5.6 at f/8, 1/1000, EC+1/2, 400ISO.

I like the setting and eye contact but the bird looks a bit soft. Is it a heavy crop?

i like the HA and soft BG
for me, the branches on right side detract from the bird - - could also consider masking out branches in LLQ
also there's a color cast (need to adjust blue and green channel) to balance whites
just some suggestions - thanks for sharing

I like the subtle colors and weeds. I'd like to see a little more sharpness/detail for a bird that large in the frame. I like Peter's idea for a crop.

Lovely pose Dave, and like the overall colours in this. Another round of sharpening would help.

Thanks for the comments fellows. Good catch Axel. It is close to 100% crop. I had sharpened a fair bit and was worried about haloes etc. Pretty bird, I just had a hardtime getting close to with 400mm when out in open.
Not sure about the whites. I try to keep a close eye on colour casts and usually don't move the WB much. Thanks for mentioning it.

very nice Dave - I love these guys. I think Peter's crop is an improvement, but I'd probably preserve a little more canvas on the right (w/o the oof plant). I'd caution against any more sharpening, as it seems to be on the brink for me already (on my monitor anyway).
