Looking at other images in this thread, I wonder if this is too light?? I lightened the black feathers slightly after it was suggested by a friend.

I like the calling pose and the setting is interesting. The image looks too bright on my monitor, particularly the blacks. Did you dial in positive EC?

    Anita:

Nice pose and interesting background, as Axel mentioned. There is quite a bit of noise in the blacks, esp. on the birds left wing. It makes me think you underexposed it and then brought it up in post. Shouldn't be much noise at that ISO I wouldn't think, if properly exposed.

Noise withstanding, I think that you could have gone a bit blacker with the blacks. None-the-less, this is one way cool image. I love the sharpness and d-o-f, the two eyes straight ahead, the paired flared epaulets, and the open bill. Way well done.

Axel, Randy, and Artie: thank you so much for the input. Yes, I'm still working on getting the proper exposure, as per Artie's guidelines, esp. on these black guys! So I did have to lighten too much....think I also need to recalibrate my monitor though, too many others' images are looking too dark to me. I'll do that, then try reprocessing this. Again, thanks for your valuable input and encouragement!

All suggestions are valid and I look forward to more wonderful images. Love the expression on your bird Anita. :)

Lovely headon pose, and the open beak a bonus. I agree the blacks look overexposed, and shouldnt have noise at ISO 400. Is this maybe a large crop Anita.

Anita, as far as your monitor brightness woes go have you checked the "Monitor Calibration Strip" at the bottom of every page on BPN? This could help you in those regards. You should be able to see a distinct difference in every shade of grey from solid black to pure white...

I also see a hint of a greenish cast on the bird's plumage, so when you do rework your image keep an eye out for that too. I like the image alot and I think it is worth a rework.

Akos, Stuart, and Daniel: thanks so much for your feedback. After recalibrating my monitor, this looks, ummmm, not good at all!! In fact, I'm embarrassed! I'm having problems with the calibration, though; I'm using ColorEyes Display Pro, and feel a bit uncertain.....the 3 black strips at the bottom of the monitor still look awfully similar - I can barely distinguish differences. And things look different when I work in the afternoon, as opposed to at night; I work at both times about equally. Any suggestions? Daniel, it's a fairly large crop, yes. Down to almost 1/3 of the original.
