Another hummer from Costa Rica, photographed at Rancho Naturalista with Doug Brown and Greg Basco using a multi-flash setup. I like the black background, the bold red Passion Flower and the swooping lines of the hummingbird...I wish the tip of the bill had more separation from the wing. I added canvas on the right and pulled back on the red channel. What do you think? C&C encouraged and greatly appreciated.

GREAT SHOT KATIE!!!! Yes, I think that this is a male Green-breasted Mango. It would be nice if the bill was seperated but MAN, what a pose. This is a winner! I might tone down the flower parts and maybe eliminate some of the white specks on the red petals. Stunning!
Love the composition Katie and the black BG really makes the red flower POP. Wonderfully sharp and love that fanned out tail.
Agree with your comment on the bill seperation - Would liked to have seen his head turned this way a little - as it is works for me also as it framed by the wings and sits in there nicely.
Katie, wonderful image. I agree with you on the tip of the beak but the image is so beautiful. The pose is not your conventional pose...I like that. Congrats!
Hi, Katie. Great to see an image from this setup. This is an idea I'd had for a while for hummingbird setups so I'm really pleased to see that it paid off for everyone. I think you've identified the main drawback to the image as being the bill touching the wing, but it's still got great lines and that dramatic light. I think it's a wonderful image.
Cheers,
Greg Basco
PS -- Yes, definitely a male green-breasted mango as Dan said (as if I would contradict Dan on a bird ID!).
