This was made during Alan Murphy's workshop in Roma TX. We spent numerous hours in the evening hawk blind on the ranch and were periodically rewarded for our efforts. The hawk would come into our setup area and fly from perch to perch for pieces of food.
Superb pose Scott and great isolation from the BG. I wonder if you have one like this in landscape format because I think it would work very well with more green room at the right. By the way, beautiful BG. :-)
Nice picture, agree with above comments, esp. more room to right.
My first thought when looking at it was, a tad too much contrast. When looking at the image in NX2, the yellow legs have a fair amount of blown pixels. By backing down the contrast a few points it helped eliminate the hot yellows. This is being very picky, but it is such a nice image, that it is worth tweaking if you agree.
The hot pixels may have been from the jpeg compression, I would be curious if the raw file shows them?
That is an excellent image of a very cool bird. This is one of the few species of birds that engage in coordinated hunting. One will flush prey and another will be ready to capture. I too would opt for a landscape orientation to better place the bird in its habitat. Very nice.
It could work as a vertical if the subject was smaller in the frame with more room at right, but I agree with an horizontal. Super good-looking subject, nice wing positions and the touching talons look cool. I would even out the blotches along bottom edge of the frame and see if you could recovery a little bit of details in the shadow between the wings above the head.
It works great as presented to me, I personally like a lot vertical comps for take offs, very nice light, level of detail is exquisit and the BG and colors looks great. Congratulations!

Hi Artie,
Thanks. I think the hawk may have had a few pieces of liver but no rabbit. I have been enjoying reading your blog http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/ and following your adventures, hope to see you soon.
