Default Flash recommendation for Nikon D80

I'm thinking of getting a speedlight for my D80.
    I would appreciate your recommendations.
Is the SB-900 the way to go. Is the better-beamer
    compatible with it?

    Thanks in advance,

    Ilija

If you can afford it, why not? Joe McNally seems to like it a lot.

    Ilija:

The SB900 is a heck of a flash, but a lot depends on your use. If it is primarily for birds, not elaborate studio set ups, I think a Sb800 with beamer would be more cost effective. Although it is much bigger, the SB900 isn't much more powerful, so you aren't gaining a lot there.

If it were me, I would get a used SB800, and put the money towards upgrading your body. I think that would give you more bang for your buck.

    Just my .02! Good luck.

You will most likely have to find a used SB-800 as this model has been discontinued, replaced by the SB-900.

I would upgrade your camera first, IMHO. Depending on your application and with the higher and better iso capabilities of the new models, the flash might not be as important.
