I happened upon this one while walking looking for some macro subjects. Didn't look like she was going to move. So, I took a couple of shots and went the long way.

    Nikon D80/105mm Micro/f5.6 at 1/50 sec/ ISO 100/ No Flash/ Processed in LR2 sharpened, +9 saturation and tightened comp.

New to taking pictures of waterfowl. Comments are more then welcome.

John, you came across a beautiful scene. The bird is nicely exposed, sharp and I like the eye contact that she gave you. This is a tough one as far as composition because you have so many distracting elements. The one that pulls my eye right away from your subject is the log. I don't feel that it adds to your story and a horizontal composition would have minimized it.

Interesting crop and good details. The trunk competes a bit with the subject. If you have a longer lens, photographing nesting birds with it would be a good idea in order to not disturb them. Keep them coming!

John, Good advice already given. I like the eye contact and details. Isn't it nice to come across a scene like this when you are out looking for macro shots!!

It sure is! It was a treat to photograph her.
