    Default Avocet chick

Avocet chicks are finally out of the nest at Palo Alto Baylands :-)

Needless to say I'm planning to spend lot of time there in the next few days and hope they'll come closer...

    Comments welcome,

    JLuc

My what big feet! I suppose s/he'll grow into them.

Nice pose, but the eye looks a bit flat and lifeless to me and the image is somehow lacking in detail. My first thought was "big crop," but you specifically mentioned it was only a slight crop so I'm not sure. Maybe the TC cost you some detail.

This is just too cute. He looks so proud of himself but I must say his feet look quite large for that little body. Great action and low angle Jean. Congratulations !! I love it.

These puffballs' plumages can be hard to look very sharp, but judging by the legs eye and bill the image could go a tad sharper. It does have a big crop look to it as Jim mentions...perhaps it lost some quality upon resizing? In any case, it looks very, very cute! I love the nonchalant look on its face, and the walking pose is so cool with those huge feet :-) Nice low angle too. I would look into toning down the highlights on the legs and feet - not rid completely, just tone down. You could clone in some neighbouring blacks at about 30-40% opacity for a good result.

Yeah those legs! A wonderful little bundle of joy to watch and I am sure it's no slouch when it comes to moving being a precocial chick. A tiny catchlight (even in PP) will probably help the lifeless look of that eye.

Hmmm, the image is just under 8M pixels so I would not consider it a "big crop"...

I applied Daniel's suggestion to tone down the highlights + apply a strong selective curve to reveal the existing but very soft catch light. Most importantly I did the resize in Photoshop as opposed to Aperture (which does not seem to do any sharpening on resize !).

Please let me know how that works (and thanks for all the comments BTW).
