Default Eager to Learn: Silhouette Shots

as it relates to birding of course!

How do you guys do it? How much is too much or too little silhouette? Where do you like to position yourself with respect to the setting or rising sun?

    50D + 500mm f/4 + 1.4x TC
    1/1300sec, ISO 1600, f/16, Shutter Priority

    Thanks.
    Colin

    Colin,

First thing is your white balance. Keep your white balance at 95000K. This will boost your red and orange tones and gives more attention to silhouette subjects.

Coming to metering, it is always best to shoot in manual mode. For your image above I would have performed follwoing steps in metering. Assuming your intent is to photograph a landing duck.
    1. I will put my camera in aperture mode and with 0 exposure comp. Meter the brightest part of the frame and note down shutter speed and aperture values.
    2. If shutter speed is not enough to stop action I will increase ISO until I get a desired shutter speed.
    3. punch in shutter speed and aperture values from above into manual mode.
    4. Based on subject size use exposure comp for correct exposure. Check your histogram.

    Hi Colin,
I like the landing capture...agree with Sid's advise on the techs...I would like to see the duck a tad sharper and darker for this type of image...lookinf forward to your next one...
