Thought I'd push the envelope a little with a Red-winged Blackbird on a white sky BG. I ran some gentle NR on the bird so as not to produce that "waxy" look to the feathers. BG sky is hugely blown but you can't have both in this image. I underexposed the bird but this is how it looked to me. Not sure if this works but here goes!

    Canon EOS 50D, 500mm f4 with 1.4 tcII

Hi John I like your experimentation !!! Great !!! For these I would suggest a little different exposure. Would probably go close to two over for the basic exposure, will still look natural !! Sharp and I like the pose !!!

Works for me. I like the look from the bird and you did a good job with the color of the epaulets. Lack of detail in the chest doesn't bother me personally as the head and wing kind of "emerge" from the darkness.

I like high-key images and this works for me. I really like the detail in the feet. The pose is great. I was able to open up the black on the chest a bit with the shadows/highlights in PS; might be would trying. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi John!

It certainly works for me. Very nice details and perspective.

I think it probably needs just a touch more NR? I love the pose and you cannot have it all with the sky too! ;) :)

You certainly created your high key effect with the black on white. I like the exposure on the head showing up the eyes in the dark plumage, but not to keen on the lack of detail on the chest area.

Like it as presented, the beak and eyes really pop out from the black on the chest. I like it a lot John!
