Got a chance to get out this morning to Nickerson. The OC's are starting to do the territorial battles but didn't see any mating. Because of all the chasing around going on today they were extra fast. Pretty frustrating as they werent keeping any kind of pattern. got this guy when he flew towards the water and the distant sky was a bit cloudy low on the horizon.....just above the water. Cropped from a horizontal to a vert. Looking forward to the next couple of months there.
Canon Mark 3 and the Sigma 300-800 at 800mm for 1/4000th of a sec. and f7.1 at ISO 800.

    Wings beautifully spread!
Very nice image Roman, nice eye contact and clean BG. I wonder how this one would look with a ligher BG. There's a dust bunny on the ULC.

Great pose and nice detail across the back. Seems the focus may have been there rather than the head (said the guy without a single flight image).

Great job of capturing this bird in flight. I really like the view of the back with the wing spread. The exposure looks dead-on. The open beak is a plus for me. I might try and selectively sharpen the body and the head a bit.

    Roman:

I agree with the technicals from the other guys. I think the point of focus was probably just above his left wing root. I do agree about some selective sharpening. I suspect the red is right on the ragged edge, so wouldn't take much local contrast enhancement to push it over the edge.

Re: composition, I know you like them tight, but I would vote for a bit more in front.

Excellent flight image. I like the BG as is since it is not too much contrast from the bird itself. Open beak is a plus. I agree a bit more room on the right would be nice.

I like the angle of flight in this, and a great view from the top, showing lovely detail. Stunning light, and the open beak a bonus. Comp looks fine to me.

I like the banking pose and open bill. It looks as if the critical focus is on the far wing and another vote for more sharpening of the head.

Well done on catching it in flight, I know how fast they are! I agree on a second round of sharpening on the head.

Good top side with nice detail and light on the speedster. Nice calling expression to boot!
