This is a new adventure posting to this website. I'm eager to hear what everyone thinks on this shot. I really enjoy getting different shots than you would normally see (my opinion) and am anxious to hear from anyone willing to look.
Hi - A big warm welcome to the BPN Family - nice to see you posting :)
When you post - please include the technical details such as shutter speed, aperture etc as it will help others see what you are doing.
Love the black and red contrast - nice details in your blacks, sun was coming from the wrong angle resulting in some shadows on the rhs of the face (always best to line the sun up at your back for even lighting).
Point of focus appears to on the bill area - seems to be the sharpest - IMHO would have used one of the eyes for the point of focus - think it would have made for a stronger image.
Like the pose - the green area in the upper left is distracting - might play with some additional crops to try and reduce that area.
Keep them coming :) and good on you for trying something different with your first post!
Welcome, and wonderful first post. I love the repeating patterns and the peek-a-boo pose, nice detail and exposure of the blacks. The left side feels empty to me and I feel does not add much to the image.
Hi Eileen,
Welcome to the BPN family...I like your first post...you have good details in the feathers...the blacks are within color range...I agree with the good advise given by Mr. Peters...I personally would have liked to have seen a little bit more of the eyes...the reds on the bill need to be desaturated a tad...looking forward to your next one...
Welcome Eileen!! This is a fantastic first post!!! Beautiful details and exposure looks great. I also love the artistic feel to this and the colors along with the composition are really nice-Well done. I hear congratulations are in order,Dave said your Black Swan image won an honorable mention at the Ocean City Arts Center. That is very impressive!! Big Congrats!!! Is this the shot? Where did you capture this beauty? Anyway Welcome and you will find that everyone here helps each other out. Don't be afraid to step OOTB and visit me in the other forum!!:)
Thanks everyone for the pointers. I am still an "amateur" at this hobby. I will try to keep all suggestions in mind as I go through the day's shots.
Denise, Thanks and yes this is the shot that won the HM in OC. I decided at the last minute to put it into the show. This shot was taken at the Cape May County Zoo on a hot afternoon. He decided it was too hot to move.
Thanks again everyone for the nice welcome to a new forum for me. I will surely post again.
Great comments and can add you can reframe the image so the eyes are more to the left and you are angled right, will have one eye more prominent and more of the beautiful feathers to the right !!! btw light angle wise for these I sometimes get of sun angle for contrast !!! Lovely image !!!
Eileen - Welcome, I am looking forward to more posts. This image is very dramatic, I found it very interesting. I share your objective of finding new ways to "frame" avian images.
Cheers
Gail
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions and pointers. I will try to make space in a part of my brain to store these facts and recall them when I get the camera in my hands.
Thank you everyone for the great reception to this unique forum.
Hi Eileen,
Lovely sharpness and details in the blacks. I have never seen this type of swan before it is very beautiful. Maybe just a bit more of a head turn would have been ideal. Lovely image, looking forward to more.
