Our fields are filled with passing White-crowned Sparrows, singing their hearts out and attracting a Sharp-shin or two now and again.
Tweaked in LR2 and PS CS4
I have removed some of the branches, do more need to come out? Noise continues to be a problem for me, how does this image look in terms of noise and sharpness. All C & C's much appreciated.
    Thanks for looking

Hi Gail - in relation to the noise - you were shooting at 1000ISO here which gave you the 1/8000th shutter speed.

I think maybe the noise is in part due too the high iso - think the noise is inherent with the 50D at higher ISO'S - in any case bit of overkill under these circumstances.
Sharpness looks good - would run some additional NR on the background - do you have noise Ninja??? They probably have noise profiles for the 50D or you could create your own.

Like the pose and eye contact - crop doesn't quite work for me - lets see what everyone else comes up with.

    Hi Gail,
I like the composition, image and exposure. The color rendition is good, and you have sharp details...the thing that catches my eye is the noise in the background, you need to run a low level pass of noise reduction again...looking forward to your next one...

Gail, Good techs by Lance and can only add that I have been trying to get one of these little guys for some time now. I would take a bit from the top. The white on top looks a tiny bit hot. I did a couple of tweaks but I'm on my laptop so if it's bad I apologize!! Looks like a cropped it a bit tight.

Hi Gail No need to go that high for your ISO !! With the 50D I'm uncomfortable going over 400 but have found Topaz to do a good job on the noise and been pushing it some !!!

If the light angle permits try working your way so most of the bird is away from the perch !!! btw tech wise would have used ISO 400 and stopped to 5.6

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I was using the ISO 1000 as an experiment, as lower values also seem to generate more noise than with the 40D or even the 30D. I haven't gone as low as 400 (how quickly we forget film) but will give it a go.
I also agree that the crop isn't quite right, but haven't decided why.
    C&C's most helpful. Thanks again
    Gail
