Default 1D Mark III on the way...anything I must know?

As I write this, I'm waiting for the UPS truck to show up with my new (refurbished) 1D Mark III. It's my very first Series 1 digital body although I've had and used every digital xxD body since the 10D (but not the 50D), and the D60 before that, and I still have an EOS-1V somewhere... I know to contact Canon immediately with the serial number for them to check their database regarding all the fixes. And I know that there'll be a bit of a learning curve so I expect to do a lot of reading and shooting in the next few days. And I plan to use it a lot! I can't wait to pair it up with my 300/2.8!

Anything I should be on the lookout for? Any localized source of set-up tips? A great advantage I have in buying a camera several years from it's initial release is that I have a lot of you to rely on for information.... I've only been a member of this site for a short time, and I've learned a ton of very useful info already, of which I'm very appreciative!

Make sure it has the latest firmware and AF fix and enjoy your new toy!

A few things I've found: I moved my ISO setting to the Set button (C.Fn IV-4-3). Man! Does that make it quick to change ISO while shooting! DO NOT be afraid to shoot at ISO 800 regularly, and I've gotten nice, clean shots at 1600, too. My copy tends to underexpose by about 1/3 f-stop as has my other Canon bodies, so you might want to keep that in mind. Battery life is close to forever, it seems. I also like setting it up so pressing the Info button shows you the information on the top LCD screen on the back LCD, as well (C. Fn II-9-1). Really nice for shooting landscapes or stationary objects from a tripod without having to peer through the viewfinder.

On microadjustment: I have found that it works, so be sure to set that for your lenses.

On AF: I have one of the early copies that, theoretically, should have the problems we are all aware of, but I must have gotten lucky because I have seen absolutely no problems with focusing. Maybe I'm just not astute enough to notice, but I'm still so happy with my Mk III, that I couldn't care less.

On Live View: Great for landscapes or studio work or the microadjustment of your lenses, but not so good for long lens shooting, as you might imagine.

On auto sensor clean: Seems to work to a degree, I guess, but still be prepared to have to wet clean your sensor just about as much as any other body you've owned.

Oh, and get a comfortable neck strap for the times you hang this thing around your neck; it is noticeably heavier than non-pro bodies.

Congatulations, Chris! You're gonna love that baby!

Read the manual five times and then read it again!

    And again and again.

Download the Manual from Canon and read it on your monitor with your camera in your hand, much easier that way.

Bob, I haven't decided whether to be angry :p;):D or happy with this new source of an unbelievable amount of photography and Photoshop educational material that you have caused me to be aware of with this link to You Tube.

    :p

    Thanks, Mate!

Jay, the MKIII was released to give Canon time to design the MKIV.

Once you start to accumulate the vast amount of information, personal preferences, guaranteed to work opinions which I might add change with the weather there is no end in sight.

I spent a bit of time in hospital trying to ingest some of this material whilst refusing mind numbing painkillers and worst of all not being able to have the Camera with me (the hospital refused on insurance grounds)

I then gave up trying to learn the Camera and decided to spend time instead on practicing on my post processing work and guess what, the hospital refused to let me keep my “high end” laptop on insurance grounds.

I did spend my time reading up on Arties work shops and Tim Grey’s CS3 Workflow (Thanks go to John Cooper for that one)

So best of luck mate, grab a nice campsite on the coast somewhere and get out the deckchair and laptop and have a break and start reading and viewing the awesome amount of material available.

Most importantly, lock up your firearms, do not succumb to strong drink and if anywhere near North Queensland beware the local home grown tobacco and don’t eat the mushrooms.

    Best of luck mate.

Thanks all for the help! Due to a "minor" shipping snafu, I ended up picking up the camera at the UPS depot. The manual is already dog-eared, and I downloaded a number of articles from various sites, and I've shot about 300 frames with it already.... I LIKE IT..... A LOT! For those that commented on the weight, it actually weighs less than my 40D with grip! I have not yet found the Custom Function which washes your dishes but there's bound to be one in there...

You are not looking mate, it is right next to the one that mows your lawn and the one that walks your dog.

Have fun and every couple of days get an hours sleep.
