    Default Displaying Arctic Tern

This was taken at Spitsbergen. While unloading the car, this tern landed just besides us. Fortunately I had already unpacked my lens, I dropped to the ground and got this shot. Apparently this is their displaying behavior, catching a fish, waiting for their mate en presenting their catch. Up till then I had never seen it, but it sure was beautiful to watch.

Kirjn very nice timing and good exposure as well as a lovely catchlight in the eye. I also like the DOF you chose. Tb be real picky it would be nice to see the feet in this image but still a very nice capture. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the nice comments Judy. To respond to your suggestion, I agree that seeing the entire feet would have been nice, but this would have required a higher shooting angle. In that case I wouldn't have had the nice BG I have now. I could have chosen a bigger aperture while shooting from a higher angle to ensure a good BG butthen the whole bird wouldn't have been sharp I think. This was my decision at that moment.

    Thanks in any case,

    Cheers

Lovely pose and moment. I know how hard it is to get feet in the clear on the beach, so I can relate.

Very nicely done. Were you fortunate enough to capture the whole ritual?

Great pose and the fish adds to it. I can see the dilemma angle vs. feet but agree with your decision.

Just gorgeous. Love the prey item and pose. I only wish for a more interesting setting.

    Krijn,

I really like it, brown background, with or without the feet. The fish, the diagional tail, the head angle, superb.

I would lighten the black froeground spot in front of the bird, and tone down the highlights in the face to make it even better.
