n looking for ID help on this from a friend's capture small ways inland off Maryland Atlantic coast. The bird flies well, but looks oiled. Just not sure, and help appreciated. Thanks BTW, that's water on the ground John, Artie, anyone?
Dave- It looks to me that the bird has got into soot or some dry, black material that has adhered to the feathers. Oil tends to look shiny and brownish in colour. I wonder if the bird can wash the material off?
Not sure John....could it possibly be a mellanistic herring gull? thanks for your input
It's possible Dave. I am impressed by how symmetrical the dark markings are. If it were fouling of some sort you wouldn't expect this. Any other ideas?
