    Default Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron

    D700
    70-200mm f2.8 VR with 1.7TC
    340mm
    ISO 200
    f5.6 at 1/1600s
    Manual mode
    Spot Metering off the sky
    0EV
    Auto white balance
    handheld

Adjusting level, darken pupil, lighten iris, sharpening, add very little background at the top then cropped.

First time using TC on moving subject. Felt like the focusing speed was slower than usual and the image came out to be blurry than usual too, probably need to practice more.

All comments and suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

since you said that the focusing was slower with the TC (which is normal), i will guess that you didnt quite acquire focus on the bird. some more sharpening may help. one thing to consider is bumping the ISO. you were at 200. my minimum for birds in flight is ISO 400. with the D700 noise will not be a problem for you even upwards of ISO 1600!! just go for it!

Very nice capture, I like the open wide wing spread, you have fine details, and nice color rendition. It could use a tad more sharpening on the eye...agree with Doctor Davis on working with higher ISO's numbers...looking forward to your next one...

Not bad at all !!! Great suggestions and fully agree. Can add to make image prior to the bird flying away from you.

The converter will slow things down a little but not much and with that lens much less than others. It is a good performer !!! btw metering wise don't recommend spot for general use !!

Hi - that lens and TC converter combo is excellent capable of really sharp images.
Excellent advice from Gus and AL.

Looking forward to seeing more :)
