Default Photo gear: bits and pieces (geared with a 1D3 in mind)

    1D3 Small Stuff

Hi, I am putting together my Adorama order; these are a few last minute details that I would appreciate recommendations if there are any (yeah right; like this wonderful group doesn't have an opinion about everything photography!)

CompactFlash Cards: Brands and sizes; are you using cards larger than 4gb? I received an email from my brother that the Canon rep at the big annual photo show in Los Angeles recommended Transcend CF cards; 1/2 the price of Sandisk cards.

Batteries: Given the size I am planning a total of three for Antarctica. More?

LCD Protector: I use the ShieldZone on the 40D (great!); anyone using the Delkin pop-up shades?

Hand Grip: anyone using the Canon E-1 Hand strap in lieu of/in addition to a neck strap?

Wireless remote: anyone using the Adorama wireless/wired shutter release remote for any of their canon cameras - one unit fits all?

Right angle viewfinders: Those doing "near the ground" macro, are you using a right angle view finder, and if so, are you using the Canon version or a different version? Adorama has the Pro Optic.

Filter brands and cost: I have four different filter sizes: 58, 67, 77, and 82! Singh Ray makes sense for stationary tripod work one size fits all with simple adaptor rings for the P holder. What about HH work, for example, four separate polarizers?

    Cheers, Jay

I am new here but since I also shoot a Canon 1D MarkIII here are my thoughts and preferences

I use SanDisk and Lexar CF cards. I have SanDisk and Transcend SHDHC cards ...... All are 8gb

Batteries: Given the size I am planning a total of three for Antarctica. More?
3 sounds like a good number of batteries to me

LCD Protector: I use the ShieldZone on the 40D (great!); anyone using the Delkin pop-up shades?
    I personally don't use one

Hand Grip: anyone using the Canon E-1 Hand strap in lieu of/in addition to a neck strap?
I don't use a hand grip / strap. But then I am mostly shooting a large lens or wide angle landscape .... tripods and monopods.

Wireless remote: anyone using the Adorama wireless/wired shutter release remote for any of their canon cameras - one unit fits all?
I use a plain old Canon wired remote, but would like to read comments that others have regarding the wireless remotes

Right angle viewfinders: Those doing "near the ground" macro, are you using a right angle view finder, and if so, are you using the Canon version or a different version? Adorama has the Pro Optic.
I do not own one, so no valid opinion

Filter brands and cost: I have four different filter sizes: 58, 67, 77, and 82! Singh Ray makes sense for stationary tripod work one size fits all with simple adaptor rings for the P holder. What about HH work, for example, four separate polarizers?
I am guessing that you are referring to Graduated Neutral Density and ND filters? Not circular polarizers?
Singh Ray is typically considered the "Top of the Line" in GND and ND filters. I have a few Singh Rays, a couple of Lee and HiTech filters. One note on the "P" size holder and 84mm filters. Many wide lens like the 16-35 and 17-40 can vignette when wide open when using the 84mm filter sets. The Cokin Z-Pro is a nice "starter" holder but if you decide you like the gnd and nd filters I would suggest the Lee filter holder. It is much more "substantial." IMHO I like 2filter.com for these type of filters

For circular polarizers I have tried many and have settled on only Hoya Pro 1D filters or B+W Kaesemann.

Hope this was of some help, they are just my opinions and preferences.

Solid advice from Bob !!! Regarding the angle finder they are useful if you have the need otherwise is just more gear to take. I can shoot flat on the ground without using one.

Ray, I use one of these which has never let me down, it is from the POTN shop and is a sh*tload cheaper than the Canon version.

3 Batteries for your 1D MKIII, don't they have 240V power on the area you are going, I know the cold knocks batteries around but I have never even come close to exhausting my MKIII battery
