Shot this against a grassy background just after a very bright sunrise. Brazos Bend State Park, near Houston, Texas. I tweaked the background color to bring out more of the orange tint.

    Paul:

Excellent use of the flash to save an otherwise difficult lighting situation. The backlight really helped with the spiderweb. Bird is sharp, nice headangle, perch is right scale.

The colors in the background are great, if perhaps just a bit too bright for my tastes. I might look at a version where the background is just slightly less bright, so the bird is relatively more prominent.

    Thanks for sharing this beauty.

Paul - I pretty much agree with Paul's comments - do like the bg colors but a little bright. Lovely head angle:)

    Cheers,

the flash work here is nice. the spider web is a huge bonus for me. i agree with the others that the bg still needs some work, just not sure where i would go with it. the lower part is a little distracting for me. wished it blended more with the upper part.

Very nice colors, although the Heron could go a bit darker. Nicely composed and tack sharp.

I followed a few suggestions and here is the result. I think it's better, and thanks to all for your comments. Oh, and let me know which version you like better and why, if you could, please.

    Thanks,

Beautiful light and pose ... and the spider web really adds. I like your second version better than the first. In fact, I would take the background saturation and contrast down a good bit further, and also help out the fill flash a little.
