This morning i saw a chunk of Amethyst that my daughter had picked up on one of our vacations sitting in the sun. My brain kicked into high gear and i though why not try to take a shot of it.

    Set Up
Amethyst chunk set on a mirror
Natural window light from the side
Black backpack set behind the Amethyst about six inches away

    Canon 50D
    Phoenix 100mm macro
    ISO 1,000
    F8.0 @ 1/800th sec.

This is my first try at shooting minerals so all CC will be appreciated.

God's light and love to all,

    chris

Nice idea to have used a mirror Chris. Like the colours.

I like the colors as well, Chris. I love that you tried something different than just closing in on the mineral and photographing it but, for me, the shape is a bit odd and I'm not really sure why I feel that way. I do think you could add a bit more sharpness to the image because minerals tend to be very bright and detailed and this feels just a bit soft to me.

I think you're on to something here - Maybe try to photograph it from an angle where the reflection were more at an angle to the actual object instead of an almost exact replica?
