A nice flycatcher that has a white iris. Picture taken at the Caribbean side of Costa Rica.

    Canon 30D
    Canon 35-350@350
    Handheld
    1/250sec.
    f/5.6
    ISO 500
    Exposure comp. -1.7
    Some crop for compo.

Now this is my question, can some body tell me how to minimize noise on a subject without loosing detail when applying sharpening?

Thanks in advance for all the help and advise.:)

Juan Carlos, very interesting looking eye on this flycatcher. I like the head turn but a slightly lower angle might have been better. I saw many birds with similar colouring while I was in Costa Rica last month but the only one I could ID positively was the Great Kiskadee. You have a beautiful country!

I'm sorry that I can't provide any advice about the noise. I have the same challenge with my images.

Juan, the repost was sharpened with "Intellisharpen II". This is a plugin for PS CS3 and does an edge mask, which sharpens edges and reduces noise in non-edges. You can make many adjustements with this plugin. It seems to have done what you are after? I just plaed around with it to see what looked best to me:).

    P.S. I will be in CR tomorrow:D

Hola Juan Carlos! Good to see you amigo! Wonderful little bird! Wish the head angle was a little more ideal, but I can understand it is perhaps not one to listen when asked for a small favor by the paparazzi! :)

    Nice composition mate.

Re: sharpening. You could select just the bird either with a quick mask or a lassoo type tool then sharpen just that. This would leave the BG intact.

    Ciao.

Very cool bird ... do wish for a better head position, although it
may also be the shooting angle is a bit steep.

I generate an edge mask for sharpening and then invert it to get a surface mask
for noise reduction. Apply the noise reduction first using the surface mask which
will protect the edge detail. Then sharpen using the edge mask which will prevent
the sharpening of any remaining noise in the non-edge areas like background or
interior areas of wings that are a solid color.
Of course, it's easier and you will usually get better results by doing your best to minimize
noise in the original capture by using the lowest feasible ISO and exposing to the right.

Lovely pose, and stands out nicely from the BG. Well captured Juan.
