When walking around a cypress dome I found this small Water Moccasin(Agkistrodon piscivorus) at the edge of one of the few puddles remaining through the dry season. The fish were concentrated and made for an easy meal. The species name piscivorous means “habitually feeding on fish”. This was a little guy at maybe 2 feet, still brightly patterned. As adults they are darker and more uniform in color. This one also seemed especially light.

    Very nicely done!

I'm a huge fan of venomous snake photography. Did it have a good disposition?

Very sharp and the reflection puts the icing on the cake.

It came out well for the reasons Collin mentioned. Interesting play on the DOF due to the snakes twists and turns.

Colin, all the moccasins I run into are very hesitant to strike. Many will gape but the only one that I can remember striking was a small one I was removing from the road. This one never moved while I was around.

Thanks Peter, no vertical. I was in a very uncomfortable contortion in the mud. Wish I had though.

Hi Paul: What a great shot. I especially like the added environment and reflection. I can't imagine I would have gotten this close in order to take a picture of a water moccasin. I do believe the picture needs some CW rotation. The nose of the snake doesn't appear to line up with the reflection. You even captured the snake's attitude heref!
