    Default Least Sandpiper

Hello all. I just spent a three-day weekend at the Salton Sea and have lots of new pictures to share. Here is a Least Sandpiper - at least I believe that is correct. I'm not a peep expert, so if I am off here please someone correct me.

Got down flat on the barnacle shells (that the SS has instead of sand) to get this one. Converted in DPP, then shipped off to the CS4 factory for NN and the usual tweaks in curves, saturation, and sharpness.

    50D, EF400mm f/5.6
Manual mode, f/5.6@1/3200 ISO 800 AWB
AI Servo autofocus using back button, handheld on the ground

    Thank you for your comments!

HI kerry - love the low angle and your exposure looks good - pose and head angle are also in check.
Looks just a tad soft on my screen - would sharpen a tad more perhaps and run some more noise reduction on the background.
    Looking forward to seeing more!!

Lance covered everything, nice low angle and pose is nice-might need a tiny rotation. Nice image wish it were mine!!

    Hi Kerry

Agree with Lance and got a couple of suggestions. Remember the light angle, light is coming from the left and right side of bird is in shadow. Tech wise would not have gone to ISO 800 with the 50D, it produces a fine image and love mine but noise is a different story, does have its fair share. I have been using Topaz and doing well !!!3

Thanks Al. This was my first real outing with the 400mm 5.6 and I was paranoid about hand-holding and having a fast enough shutter speed. I now know that I can get away with 1/1000th with this lens. Learning every day, and that's why I'm here!
