I have been trying to get a decent in-flight image of this species for over a year. Today I decided to go out to Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City to see what was out there. These guys were on a small pond next to the lake. I was a bit breezy and 38 degrees but when there are birds to photograph, I'm in.
Canon 1D Mark IIN
Canon 500mm with 1.4x TC
1/3200 sec, f/8
Mode: Manual
Metering: Evaluative
ISO: 400
I like the wing position and feather reproduction Would have been nice if taken a fraction before Seems to be just past Could also go in and give the eye an extra usm pass Good luck with these guys !!!!
This image is sharp and well exposed. I don't quite agree with Al and Fabs...I think that you pressed the shutter at just the right time, it is just that the bird's head and body are angled slightly away from the camera because of it's flight path.
