    Default Sunrise Kingfisher

My first post as a paying member of this site. Yesterday morning, I got up early with some mates to travel 180km to our favourite nature reserve, for some fun and action. This was my first shot as the sun was still rising. The colour in the BG was as shot. I liked the natural silhouette this created from the Pied Kingfisher.

Big welcome as a member, Stuart :)

I love the BGs color and the silhouette and the way the light goes through the wings. I'm undecided on the composition though, if you have more space to the right, I may get rid of the clump of dirt and place him in the left, looking into the picture. As presented, it has too much space to the right IMO, I'd crop more on the right to really emphasize the going out of the pic compo. Just a thought...

Welcome to BPN and a lovely first post Stuart. I agree with Fabs comments and agree more room to the right would strengthen this image and if the mound of dirt could be eliminated that would also be desirable. Beautiful lighting and I love the overall feel of this image. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much Fabs and Judy. The " clump of dirt " you refer to is actually the exit splash of the kingfisher from the water. I realize this is not the perfect comp, as the KF is too far to the right, but I wanted to include the splash. If the BG water was smoother ( with no ripples, I could have added canvas.)

I like the wing position and colors and would sharpen the bird more.

Good to have you on board as a member, Stuart. Your comments and images are a credit to the site. I like this but would prefer more of the splash as it would make it more obvious. Backlit wings are great.
