I'm afraid that my attempt at an impressionist vision of last Autumn is not successful, since the whites in the birches are blown, but I'd appreciate any comments and suggestions you might have.

The image involved a fair APTATS, quick Mask helped some with that.

    Your input is always valued.

    Kent,

I am a beginner for what its worth, I love the photograph.

How did you do that. I noticed the use of a macro lens, I do not own one. Was it controlling in producing this effect. What is APTATS?

    Regards

Hi Kent - the blown whites dont bother me in the context of this photo - I like it a lot - feels very much like a impressionist painting.
With these a fair amount of personal taste comes into play - some will love it - others wont.

Jeff- APTATS is Robert O'Tooles quick mask tutorial CD - Well worth the $20 many times over.

Thanks, all. As usual, your comments are encouraging.

    Jeff --

The macro lens had nothing to do with it. Thr trick is to use a slow shutter speed and then move the camera (the opposite of what you'd normally do -- i.e., you normally want the camera as still as possible.)

I find using a tripod helps control the movement, tho'. So I was moving the camera straight down, and a tripod+head helped me keep the motion straight. A lot of trial and error with regard to how fast to move the camera. I became interested in this after seeing some of william kneale's photos in Outdoor Photography. Hope this helps.

I was referring to how did you produce the impressionest look not the motion blur.

Kent, Did you mean William Neill? He is one of my all time favorites! Did you know you can buy his "Impressions of Light " digital edition for $15.00!! That is a great bargain- Kent, your image reminded me of his work as soon as I saw it.

Jeff, You should check out William Neill's website-I enclosed a link for you -he has some great looking images !!

Thanks, Denise. Yes, I meant william neill (william kneale is a historian of logic). I didn't know the offer was still available at that price. Have to get it.

Jeff -- the impressionist look is what you can get using motion blur. I didn't do anything extra to get it. The PP I did was to clean up some things I didn't like. I'll post a version to which only a curves adjustment has been applied so you can compare. You can also use Zoom with a slow shutter speed if yoou have a zoom lens. Another way is to use multiple exposures (Nikon users can do this in camera; we Canon users have to do it in PP afaik).

Great range from dark to light. Whites aren't over by much and would be easy to bring back. Love the colours and the blur effect. Would make a lovely print.

    Hi Kent

This is an image that really stirs emotions (at least in me). I love the pastel like colors, the blur and it all makes it seem like something out of a dream. I would be more than happy to call this image mine.
