Yesterday, on an overcast morning, I sighted and photographed my first White-winged Scoter. I think (but I'm not sure) that they are seen infrequently around here. Anyway, it was a good catch for me. I thought the rascal looked a little puzzled, or perhaps disgusted, about my camera being pointed in its direction. Do the blacks present OK?

Did well with the dark areas Wendell Overcast is the way to go !!!

Might try selecting the body of the duck and increasing contrast. Would try it with selective color adding a few points of black to the neutral/black. Can also darken the black area on the base of the bill. btw eyes on those ducks always look funky, its good to select and work on a bit. Congrats on the capture !!!

This looks like a juvenile male (white near eye) transitioning into adult plumage...I say this because there's still lots of brown on him, these are tough birds to get this close....image a little soft but I've used a 2x converter on my 70-200, obtaining same results...blacks could be a bit darker but I'm at work on a crappy monitor...

Well, all the criticism is "right on" . . . I see now that I myself made the originally black feathers too brown in my effort to create a more "sculpted" look in the body. And I also ran NR on the whole image, softening the subject unnecessarily.

Thanks for the input; it was just what i needed.

Just looks a little flat, but curves can help with that! Well done! A little sharper too, and you are winning.
