Does this composition work? Is the pier competing w/ the horizon too much? Is the shoreline distracting?
    Thanks guys!
I am not able to get higher or even lower to move the pier up or down in frame-

I'm planning a trip to Maine this summer and I need to work on some Landscape compositions before I go so I can take at least one descent image!

    Hi Denise!

Here goes what I see at my present level of knowledge ... I would like to see more of your nice arched curve connect all the way on the right side ... the bottom shore line would then flow from the bottom, up to the right, connect and then head out back to the left along the pier and to center of your image.

If it were possible to stand higher or lower, maybe that would allow some separation from the end of the pier and the distant horixon.

There are some spectacular colors and hues going on. Maybe waiting for the sun to just peek through would give the image a defined focus ... place that at a power point and you will have your nice pier pointed at it!

I also like the little wave that is echoing the arch of the near shoreline. Experiment and also try an even slower shutter speed to see if you like a smoother, dreamy water effect.

    Hi Denise
    Here's my 2 cents.
When I get home from a photo shoot (sorry Artie !!!) I skim thro' images to see which if any give me that feel good feeling, and then concentrate on these to see what could be better.
Your image has the feel good feeling but to me something in the water on the bottom left would give more depth.
Maybe you could take a child's yacht etc to plonk down to give that depth !!!
    Cheers: Ian Mc

I am no landscaper, but what I can see is:

    - great leading shoreline,
    - nice dawn (dusk?) sky
    - the jetty does blend into the distant shoreline
    - I feel you need something in the mid-ground area, I would say the jetty so you have a bit more balance in the comp

But like I said, I am not into landscape photography, though I appreciate it and love looking at the many fine examples. :)

    I'm with Akos on landscape

I do like the dynamic feel. the dock draws you to the sunset, nice.

Great suggestions and fully agree Can add I think you can tweak the colors for more punch but still keep natural !! Very good feel and I like it a lot !!

i wished i could help you denise. as far as this one goes, i would crop some off the bottom and make it a pano. putting the horizon in the middle. i think getting closer to the pier would help you get some separation between it and the horizon line. you'd actually be shooting under the pier so that's where the horizon would be.

guess i said more than i thought!!
