This isn't a particularly stunning image, but it is a stunning bird - a male Bee hummingbird, the smallest bird in the world, and the size of a large bee. It's endemic to Cuba, and even there only found in limited locations. Therefore I thought people might find it of interest. I tried to make the background as unobtrusive as I could, but I'm not sure if it works. At Maria la Gorda, western Cuba, Feb.

    D300, Nikon 80-400, hand-held, ISO 800, 1/500, f6.3, no flash.

    Hi Richard,
This is a wonderful record shot. Did you crop a lot? Would you be OK to post the original? Just curious to see about the crop that's all. I love the colors on this little critter. So cute too. I bet it's tiny. :)

I know this is one difficult bird Richard !!!

The area behind the bird does look strange, even if you have some branches will be an excellent image. It is very well exposed and sharp with the bird in a fine pose !!!

Wow, this is one of the holy grails of birding.
Good for you, I envy you on your photo
    but mostly as a birder.

    Cheers, Ilija

    Hi Richard,
I like the capture...there is something funky going on to the left side of the frame, also need to run a pass of noise reduction in the background...

Hi Richard stunning bird - guess its a huge crop - which explains the quality/ noise etc. Would be intrested in seeing the uncropped one :)

It is indeed a huge crop- here is the unedited jpeg extract from the original Raw file, without any cropping, color/ levels modification, noise reduction etc. I would love it if someone can improve significantly on my effort, and tell me how they achieved it, of possible - particularly removing the bright chunks of background between the leaves (I think they're out of focus white flowers).

Thank you for your comments -

What a find Richard, really cool! To be honest I also like the original and would be tempted to not crop quite a much.

Big congrats and thanks for sharing!
