I could pay a visit to my mother and grandmother of my lovely daughter as I was in the neighbourhood of Netherlands most famous Dipper. I never saw one before, so I was happy to photograph this fellow. The light levels were very low and on top of my broken tripod that particulair day :( I had to be creative at a shutter speed of 1/40th sec. Actually I wanted a less portrait like photo, but it was too difficult with these light levels.

I have ordered the Wiberly head WH-200 now, it's also an upgrade from the Sidekick, I hope I like the Wimberley head.

So happy for you Andrew that you had the opportunity to see this little beauty. Good exposure and nice head turn as well as good detail. I do find the stick a little distracting and if you clone I would consider cloning the branch out. I would also cropping more off the right to off center this dipper. It is a very clean BG which really adds to the beauty of this capture. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful find Andrew.

Thanks Judy for your critique. I've chosen to keep the whole branch in the photo and it centered the Dipper indeed. But I am content with that composition, but thanks again for your thoughts!

    Hi Andrew -

I'm unfamiliar with this handsome bird. I like the pose and the complimentary color of the water. The image is dark overall and would benefit from lightening the midtones and a shadow/highlight adjustment to bring out detail in the dark areas of the bird.

Nice work under bad conditions. I like the background a great deal. I too find the stick distracting for my taste.

Adding to the other comments, I would try whether some selective sharpening would bring out more details since it appears a bit soft on my monitor.
