    Default Reddish Egret Eating

The photo of the Reddish Egret was taken at Black Point Drive in the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. I used a Nikon D200 with a 500mm P f4.0 manual focus lens. I also used a SB800 flash with a Better Beamer. The camera settings were ISO 400, F6.3, and speed 1/500. Of course I used a tripod. I used Photoshop to improveI tonal and cropped in a little tighter. I would appreciate critique on this photo. ADubin

    Hi Arnold,
you've got the egret in the right moment of action. I love the waterdrops!
The only nit I see is the sharpnes of the birds head; to me it looks a bit "soft", although I think you tried to sharpen ist; because on the other hand it looks oversharpened to me?

The head looks a little soft to me too. A lower angle would also have been better IMO. Cropped a little tight at the tail. Good timing, and the fish is a great bonus.

Great work capturing this action. I'm a low angle kinda' guy, so I'm in agreement that a low angle would have improved this image, making me feel more involved. The image feels tight to me also (which is a nice problem to have, considering this was cropped). Negative space can add to the impace of an image. I'd like to see a little more room above your subject, as well as behind him.

I'll echo the more room suggestion. As for lower, I know that isn't always possible out at Black Point. Nice that you some nice detail in the fish as well. Always a pleasure to watch the reddish egrets fish.

You did a good job capturing the action with those flying water drops and the cute striped fish. You did a very good job with the flash. Since you cropped, it should be an easy matter to add a little more room behind the bird and a tad more above. It's too bad that the birds body wasn't angled toward you rather than slightly away from you.

    Rosl,

I used Adobe Lightroom to process (including sharpening) this photo. I think the reason why the bird's head doesn't look as sharp as the other part of the bird is because it got wet when it pulled the fish out of the water. Thanks for your critique, ADubin

Daniel, Thanks for your feedback. Refer to my comments about sharpening on the bird's head to the responds I made to Rosl. It was impossible to get a lower angle from the area that I had my tripod set-up on. If this was your photo, would you not post or take this photo if you couldn't to a lower angle? You are correct about the tight cropping on the tail. Do you have any guidelines about cropping a photo like this? Your inputs will make me look harder when I take my future photographs. ADubin

Linda, Thank you very much for your comments. You are correct about the tight cropping. Do you have any guidelines about cropping a photo like this? I know you can't capture the bird at the optimum angle all the time. Would you have a tendency of not posting or taking a photo like this if it was you? I'm trying to get people opinions so I can see I how I can improve my photographs in the future. ADubin
