    Default Mack Warranties

Do you buy them? What has been your experience? Has anyone been burned by Mack?

I have not had a problem with the camera for which I bought the Mack Warranty, so I cannot evaluate service. I believe they are a good company. That said, I always wonder if the $ are worth it. As a Canon shooter I know that I have a full year of no charge service. I have had to use this and had great results. After the first year is when the Mack kicks in. So, is the cost of the Mack less than any charge Canon would have to repair equipment? Lately I have passed on the extended warranty.

Edit - I do carry insurance to cover accidental damage, theft etc, that the Mack would not cover anyway.

I had a problem with Mack. I sent a camera in for a repair. Based on what came back to me in a report, and in telephone conversations that I had with them, I don't believe they attempted to fix the problem, but simply returned the camera.

I also carry insurance to cover accidental damage, for everything else I will pay to have Canon repair, or if I don't feel the camera is worth the cost, I will buy a new one, but I will never buy another Mack warranty.

A Mack major change is in the wind and about to be uploaded!

Up until now a Mack Warranty only applied AFTER the manufacturer's warranty expired. If you bought a Canon in the USA and shipped it to Australia, during the first year you had to send it back to the USA for warranty service. That was are real bummer for those of living down under.

Also, if your lived in the USA and during the first year went away on a vacation you had to ship the camera back to the USA for Canon warranty repair.

Enter the Mack Diamond Warranty: international coverage from the first day purchased.

I have been playing email with the warranty manager for Mack to clarify all of this as a result of my desire to have protection for all of the gear :D all of you have talked me into buying ;):D.

Under the new Diamond program, and in my case because I have both a US and Australian address, I will register what I buy from B&H at my US address and what I buy in Australia at my Australian address and purchase either the Domestic Diamond Warranty (US purchase/US address) or the International Diamond Warranty (purchase anywhere/Australian address).

I haven't seen the fine print; obviously it is going to cost more than the basic Mack Warranty because it is from Day One instead of applying after the manufacturer's warranty has expired.

I will keep you posted; I am guessing that the product will be available on line in the next 30 days.

    Cheers, Jay

Jay, having many issues with warrantees and Canon I would warn against anything but a Canon Australia warranty for expensive BODIES.

Canon has no problem with genuine third party warrantees for L series lenses no matter where purchased as they also do with their Speedlites as long as you have a valid receipt.

Canon has knocked back many claims on bodies purchased from overseas including B&H.

I strongly suggest that you phone Canon Sydney office and check with them.

Also find out who you are talking to and record their Name, time (to the minute) and date of the conversation

Hi, regarding bodies, there is no question that Canon Australia will not repair under warranty a body bought outside of Australia.

Regarding lenses and Speedlites, you are telling me something I did not know.

Regarding bodies, I am buying my 1D3 here in Australia, in part because unlike lenses, I am able to buy the body from Digi Direct for almost the same price as buying it in the USA. The same for the 580 EX II; approximately same price as in the USA.

In my case I will only have the body for six months before I go overseas. The result is that depending upon where I bought the body, I would have to send it back to that country in the first year for repair.

The Mack Diamond International Warranty is a new product. I am not going to get into a debate whether Mack honors their warranties; that is not what this discussion is all about.

The original Mack warranty specifically stated in the terms and conditions that it did not apply until after the manufacturer's warranty had expired.

I am advised by the warranty manager for Mack that the Diamond terms and conditions will apply from day one even if the item is still under a mfg's warranty. That protects someone that buys a product from overseas, e.g., a body from B&H or someone who buys a product and goes traveling within the period of the mfg's warranty.

If you buy a camera from B&H, ship it to Australia, and there is a problem, the Mack Diamond Warranty will result in the product being repaired in Australia at a place contracted with Mack - it will not go to Canon Australia.

I have just checked the Mack website and the Diamond warranty is not yet uploaded.

This is the last word I have received from Mack:

    Jay,

Yes the international diamond warranty would be the correct contract to purchase. The reason you can not find it on our site is because it is a new contract and my IT department needs to up loaded to our site.

Concurrent with this post I have written to Mack to determine an expected date for the delivery of their new baby!

Ray I have purchased many L series lenses and my 580 EXII from discount Digital Photographics and have had no problem with Canon accepting their warranty claims.

See the top of the page below and you will see the remarks about warranty claims on Lenses and Speedlites.

    http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/canonlenses.htm

Canon also directed me to them recently when I desperately needed a 400 f/5.6 when I could not find one anywhere else INCLUDING B&H New York which still have NO stock of them, see their page below.

I ordered one on a Wednesday at 4 pm and it was delivered to my door the following day by 10.30 am, I would deal with them before I use any established Camera retailers here in Melbourne.

Hi, Who is Ray? I am Jay!! :D

I now understand about the lenses and speedlites having an international warranty; thank you.

    Camera bodies do not!

    Why the reference to B&H?

I went to DD today and looked at backpacks and spoke to Chris about the 300 f/2.8; DD's price was $1,000+ AUD more than the USA price. I am doing another thread on experiences importing and the issue of paying GST or Customs.

    Cheers, Jay

This is the latest regarding the new Mack warranty:

Jay, I will speak to my IT department regarding the posting. However, please
note that the diamond warranty must be purchased withing the first 30
days of the purchase of the equipment. Laura

Laura, I understand that! That is SPECIFICALLY why I have not ordered my equipment from Adorama, AND why I have ordered my Canon 1D3 and told the distributor here in Australia that I will not pay the balance and take delivery of the camera until the Mack Diamond Warranty is on the website. Jay
