    Hi Kurt,
Nicely done. I love the composition, image and capture...the color rendition on the bird is dead on...the head angle and sharp eye are superb. you display sharp details and the background compliments the subject very well...good show...

Fully agree with Gus Might add I would like seeing a little more room around the bird !! Lovely image

btw today I tried using the 100-400 with a converter at Artie's suggestion and it is capable of making a sharp image ... caught me by surprise .. pleasant surprise !!!

Beautiful, Kurt! The pose, BG, and light are just perfect. Agree that it could use a bit more room. Congrats!

I tried the 1.4x converter with the 100-400 L last year during osprey season, it surprised me a bit as well that it had excellent sharpness (at around f6.3 to f8 if I remember correctly). But oddly enough, the 1.4x was *just* a bit too short for the times I needed a converter and couldn't get closer. I'll end up using the combo at air shows next month though for those pesky acrobatic planes at the top of thier loops :)

I've been trying to develop stalking skillz and shooting from blinds in an effort to get closer as more cost effective alternative than big glass ... with mixed results :) Still lust after bigger glass!

    Does autofocus work on the 1.4 and 100 - 400 L combo.

It was my first Canon L lens. After purchasing the 400MM 5.6 prime, I cannot go back. I miss the IS but the zoom seems soft to me. Not just saying that, it does not seem to deliver. To your earlier point, maybe I was too far away for my subjects. Genrelly speaking, I thing you must be within 20 feet to get any decent results from a 400MM. If auto focus works with the 1.4 TC, I might give the 100-400MM another try.

No Jeff it doesn't. Only works with certain lenses. 200/2.8, 500/f4, 600/ f4, 300 and a few others. B and H photo in New York has a whole list of compatible lenses. Go to converters, takes a bit of digging but you can find it.
