    Default Embden Goose

Someone told me the ID of this goose, but I forgot. This was taken Saturday evening on a "Day In The Field with James Shadle" workshop at Crandon Park, Key Biscayne where I was a co-instructor. Everybody had a great time, and enjoyed some excellent light.

    Shooting Solution
    Camera: Nikon D200
    Lens: Sigma 500 f/4.5 + Nikon TC14E (700mm)
    Manual Exposure, 1/1600 @ f/6.3
ISO 400, Mongoose M2.3 head on Giottos legs
    Manual Focus

    Thanks for looking!

Really love the lighting in this image Blake and the pose is great. As Sid mentioned it looks like it has an attitude or it likes to be photographed. Beautifully captured !!

Great light, angle and details. I think the goose looks quite friendly. :) The only thing I would change is removing the reed above the head but that is really nitpicking.

Hey Blake, Nice image, nice BKGR, nice light. Not sure what it is but it belongs in Hand of Man since it was raised in a BARN!

Artie these birds are totally wild They are free to come and go but choose to stay With the heavy pampering I don't blame them They are fed among other things hand picked Romaine lettuce !!!!

They may be free and they may be wild but they were still born in a BARN!

Looks as if they are related to my freinds in Socorro.

I actually grabbed this one out of the water and flipped him upside down and I found two red brands on the bottom. One read, "MADE IN USA", another (which was much smaller than the other and right below it) read, "not in a barn". :D ;)

ps: That said, I am moving this to Hand of Man; we need to set a policy for the placement of images of domesticated birds...

You have a good looking goose....love the colors. Personally I'm glad to know its name......they are around many lakes up here and I never knew what they were. I have to admit.....they'd add some class to any barn with those gorgeous blue eyes.

    Hi Blake,
Great shot, I'm intrested in the sigma 500 4.5 and Nikon teleconverter.
I also noticed you used manual focus, was this your only option? I've been trying to find a 1.4x that will af with my sigma 500.
appreciate any info you can give me on this.

Hi Ray, thanks for the comment. The Sigma 500 f/4.5 and Nikon TC14E combo is super sharp; but, only allows for manual focus. I was talking to Dr. Van Hilliard, and (I believe) she mentioned that the Sigma brand 1.4X teleconverter maintained AF with the Sigma 500 f/4.5. That may be dependant on the version of the lens though.

For the money, and the weight (it's such a light lens!), you can't go wrong with the 500 f/4.5.

I hope I was able to help!

    Hi Blake,
Thanks for the info, I have the sigma 1.4 and it will not af
Is it optically possible to produce an 1.4x tele for an f-4.5 lens.
I remember reading about a Cannon f-4.5 lens somewhere that would af with a 1.4
Thanks for your help. I love my 500 but its very hard for me to focus sharply with the 1.4
