Default Totally subjective & non-scientific analysis of laptop displays

Spent a majority of a day this week walking through countless electronic stores in Tokyo and specifically Akihabara looking at the displays of a wide variety of laptops. The background is that I am still looking for a laptop with a display which is good enough that I don't need a second monitor and which can serve as my primary photoediting machine. I know, I know...

The displays which consistently attracted my attention due to sharp images with rich, vibrant and yet realistic colors were laptops by Fujitsu & NEC. This impression was formed over a wide variety of different models by these brands, hugely different lighting conditions and viewing angles. More than once I thought that the displays of Fujitsu/NEC laptops looked even at an angle better than the Sony/HP/Dell/Toshiba/etc. laptop right in front of me.

There is no doubt that the latter brands can have great laptop displays. But it was the consistency over different Fujitsu/NEC models which I found remarkable. NEC laptops appear not to be available in the US while the current Fujitsu models are a bit dated/expensive for their configuration.

    The search continues...

Perhaps someone will find this useful.

    Hi John

I think the limiting factor is the size and inconsistent screen angle. I know you could get used to setting the angle correctly every time but can't overcome the size.

I have a 17 inch laptop and find it limiting for PS work. If you are going for one why not use an external monitor at home? Processing wise the new machines are very capable !!

Another consideration is the color gamut. Some newer laptops have a wider gamut, which should help with processing.

    Alfred,

of course, size of a laptop display is an inherent drawback. Not to mention that I want my dream machine also to be portable and light weight. So a 17in laptop is out of question... :)

Why not an external monitor? The last time I used a desktop and/or a conventional monitor was probably in 2000. I am so used to laptops and being able to take them with me wherever and whenever I want (don't ask) that I find the idea of tying myself to a desk utterly incomprehensible. It's just not going to work. And forget the idea of maintaining and synchronizing a desktop AND a laptop. I just don't have the time and patience...

As for the screen angle, this was a factor I particularly paid intention to during my random walk through electronics stores. Just by the fact that all the laptops I saw during the course of the day were displayed at all sorts of different heights and viewing angles gives me confidence to say that the Fujitsu/NEC laptops really stand out with regard to viewing angle. They certainly are not perfect but much better than the competition.

And as far as conventional, and by that I mean LCD, computer displays is concerned: models by LG Display blow the competition out of the water. Just stunning.

    Thanks for your input. JR
