It was odd to look up and see 30-40 Cormorants sitting lakeside in a tree. Mating pairs I assume or just a party?

    Bill:

I like the head angle, open beak and eye of your cormorant.

If the image has enough detail to tolerate it, I might consider cropping in from the left to cut out the twig sticking up, and down just a bit from the top. You could also consider cloning out the stick, and just a very modest crop from the left.

    Thanks for sharing

Good suggestion Randy. How does this look? I like it better.

I like it better. It makes the eye pop, and I feel like I can see more detail in the bird.

If I might add the bird is facing to the right and there is less canvas on that side than behind the bird. If there was more canvas on the right it would have better balanced the comp rather than having him sit in the middle of the frame.

    Dave:

I certainly agree about the room issue. I do think that the crop from the left helped the balance. In a perfect world, a bit more to the right would be nice. In general, I think tall vertical subjects do better being centered than most other configurations however. Perhaps if Bill has more material on the right, he could try that.

Repost is a definite improvement. Agree re more room on the right - maybe to have the bird's head centred, with body to the left and room to "look into".
