Exploring more possibilities of combining de-saturated and saturated elements, here is another one.
This is a window of a building in Bodie, California, a true ghost town which is in a state of "arrested decay". The building is from circa 1880, when there were 10,000 people living in Bodie. The image in the glass has not been manipulated - it is the distortion of the glass as it was manufactured in those days.
If you ever get a chance to visit Bodie, I highly recommend it. The photo ops alone are worth the trip, and the whole place gives you the feeling that there are, well, ghosts there! It seems like everyone just disappeared one day... :eek:
Kerry, I like your idea here,combining saturated and de-saturated elements together. I love the distorted reflection. The composition is messing with my eyes-I guess cause nothing looks straight and there are so many edges. Maybe a vertical crop using the side of the window as your angle of perspective? Just an idea(I'm not even saying it's a good idea) but I think you are on to something here and I would be interested in others opinions. Good eye!!
Yes, I agree with your observation about straight lines. One of the interesting (and sometimes frustrating!) things about Bodie is that the buildings are all sagging and leaning in all directions. There isn't a straight horizontal or vertical line to be found in the entire place! Here's a sample, and I believe it is the same building as the one I posted. What would you use for a reference? :o ;) I will play with it some more, maybe an actual perspective change or warp in PS...
Kerry, This reminds me of a place we used to go to as kids. It was a remote old ghost town-We would spend hours there exploring. Anyway I see your dilemma-I tried a crop in CS4 using the perspective crop-Don't know if you'll like it but this is what I was thinking. Hope it helps. If not you know what file to put it in.:) PS -I went off the inside right pane (the white part)I thought it stood out more.
Maybe if we're lucky David Thomasson will happen by and lend a hand.

Thanks Denise, I do like that crop. I was playing around with the same perspective tool and ended up with virtually the same thing! Great minds, and all that... :D
Love the image, Dave. Great use of saturated/desaturated elements. Both look like the real thing!
One little nit is the fact that the top corner of the frame is missing. I'd have loved to have seen the entire thing - I think it would have kept me from thinking of this as an image and more like I was looking in a window. Just some food for thought...
