    Photo taken on Tuesday in Belmar, NJ. EOS 40D, 500 MM lens, f/8.0, 1/3200 sec 640 ISO fill flash with better beamer, tripod and wimberly head. Added sky in front of the subject in photoshop.

    Hi David. You've got good detail in the blacks. The whites in back look like they could be toned down just a little. It would have been nice if the bird were flying towards you instead of away from you. It looks like the far wing was somewhat underexposed and in trying to pull out detail, you got a bit of noise. I'd run some selective NR on that area. Thanks for posting!

    David:

    Doug hit all the major points. The bird angling away is my major concern.

    If you have the material, I would prefer just a bit more on top and bottom, and perhaps a tad more in front, if you do add top and bottom.

    Exposure on mixed black and white birds is always a compormise. The more contrast in the image, the more difficult it is. I love common loons, but they are very difficult to expose everything well!
